Friedrich Fröbel died on June 21, 1852 in Marienthal, and was laid to rest three days later in the cemetery in Schweina. His memorial gravestone was made to the design of Wilhelm Middendorf by Ernst Luther – a descendant of Martin Luther and a former student of Fröbel – in gratitude to his great friend and mentor. The gravestone features the three symbols most widely connected to Fröbel: the sphere, the cylinder and the cube. In 1872, the gravestone was moved to “Fröbel’s Rest” near Bad Liebenstein for use as a memorial, and a new gravestone placed on his grave.
For more than 160 years, the final resting place of Friedrich Fröbel has drawn friends of Fröbel from Germany and around the globe. The grave is also part of the circular trail “Following Fröbel's Footsteps In and Around Bad Liebenstein".
