The Free Fröbel School in Keilhau, a municipality of the city of Rudolstadt, is a special needs school with a focus on language development. The school supports students with language disorders, delays in speech development, or limited communication and social abilities. The children are given support in ways that correspond to Fröbel philosophy, taking into consideration their age, abilities, and cognitive and emotional development.
Following Friedrich Fröbel’s pedagogic concept, the school offers a contemporary and comprehensive curriculum, and diagnosis-led, individual special needs education for students from Years 1-10. Since 1956, the Free Fröbel School in Keilhau has continued Fröbel’s practical work into the present.
Friedrich Fröbel grounded the General German Education Institute (Allgemeine Deutsche Erziehungsanstalt) in Griesheim in 1816, which was moved to Keilhau in 1817 and located in the building complex that today houses the Free Fröbel School. Until 1939, students from around Germany were taught here following an innovative curriculum based on democratic principles.
